Rae Reid: A Pioneer in Women's Lacrosse
Rae Reid's introduction to lacrosse began through her husband, Peter, a
Fremantle Lacrosse Club member with a passion for growing the sport in
Western Australia. Rae quickly joined him in this endeavor.
Reforming WA Women's Lacrosse
In 1965, inspired by an interstate women's match held during the men's carnival in Perth,
the Western Australian Women's Lacrosse Association (WAWLA) reformed and affiliated with the Australian Women's Lacrosse Council (AWLC). Rae took a leadership role, founding the first viable WAWLA, which operated independently until merging with the men's association in 2010. She served as Secretary from 1965-1971, President from 1969-1980, and later as Patron from 1990-2012.
National and International Influence
Rae's influence extended nationally as President of the AWLC from 1969-1972, and later as Administrator/Secretary from 1980-1994. She represented Western Australia at AWLC meetings for 46 years. Her dedication was recognized with Life Membership of the WAWLA and Fremantle Women's Lacrosse Club in 1975. In 1989, she received Life Membership of the AWLC, followed by a Certificate of Merit in 1990.
Lasting Legacy
The International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations (IFWLA) honored Rae in 2003 for her foundational role as an administrator. Posthumously, the Women's State League Premiership trophy was named the Rae Reid Trophy. Her vision and dedication shaped women's lacrosse for over 47 years, leaving an exceptional legacy.
